The United States House Committee on Foreign Affairs has condemned the abduction of worshippers from two churches in Kajuru Local Government Area of Kaduna State. The committee described the incident as a grave violation of religious freedom and human rights.
Reacting to the attack in a post on X, formerly Twitter, the committee referenced previous statements by former United States President Donald Trump. It stressed that the United States would not remain silent in the face of continued violence against Christians in Nigeria. The committee warned that the persistent killing and abduction of Christians by terrorist groups operating in northern Nigeria is unacceptable.
The committee stated that Islamic terrorists in Nigeria attacked churches and kidnapped more than 168 Christians on Sunday. It added that President Donald Trump was clear that the United States cannot stand by while such atrocities continue. The committee noted that the massacre of innocent Christians will not be tolerated.
During his time in office, Donald Trump repeatedly raised concerns over the alleged persecution of Christians in Nigeria. This development eventually led to Nigeria being designated by the United States as a Country of Particular Concern over violations of religious freedom.
In line with this designation, the United States government reportedly carried out an airstrike on December 26, targeting suspected terrorist hideouts in Sokoto State.
However, weeks after the airstrike, terrorists launched a large scale attack on churches in Kajuru. On January 18, armed men stormed Cherubim and Seraphim Church 1 and Cherubim and Seraphim Church 2 in Kurmin Wali community. A total of 177 worshippers were abducted during church services.
Sources close to the incident disclosed that 11 of the abducted victims later escaped from captivity. This left 166 worshippers, including women and children, still being held by the attackers.
The Kaduna State Police Command and the state government have confirmed the abductions. They assured the public that security agencies are making efforts to rescue the victims and apprehend those responsible.
Meanwhile, the Northern Christian Association of Nigeria has strongly condemned the attack. The association has called for the immediate and unconditional release of the kidnapped worshippers. It also urged authorities to act swiftly to prevent further attacks on religious communities.
