Former Senator representing Kaduna Central, Shehu Sani, has welcomed the counter terrorism partnership between Nigeria and the United States, describing it as a major step that would unsettle terrorists and those who support them.
Sani made the remarks in a post on his verified X handle on Saturday, where he noted that many Nigerians are hopeful the collaboration will translate into visible and lasting improvements in the country’s security situation.
His comments followed recent statements by the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, who revealed that Nigeria is currently engaged in active collaboration with the United States to address the growing wave of insecurity affecting several parts of the country.
Ribadu explained that the partnership is aimed at strengthening intelligence sharing, enhancing counter terrorism operations, and improving the capacity of security agencies to confront terror groups and criminal networks.
Reacting to the development, Sani said the partnership should be pursued decisively and without compromise in order to achieve meaningful results.
The partnership should strategically and mercilessly locate, combat, and eradicate terrorists wherever they are in all parts of the country, the former lawmaker said.
He further argued that the collaboration would not be welcomed by certain individuals and groups who benefit directly or indirectly from ongoing insecurity.
According to him, there are three categories of people who would be unhappy with the partnership. These include terrorists themselves, individuals who are sympathetic to terrorist causes, and those with ulterior or hidden motives other than genuinely ending terrorism in the country.
Sani’s remarks come at a time of heightened public concern over insecurity, with citizens increasingly calling for stronger domestic and international cooperation to tackle terrorism, banditry, and other forms of violent crime across Nigeria.
