Tension gripped Okon-Aku community in Ohafia Local Government Area of Abia State on Friday after a youth, Mr. Igwe Akuma from Ndi Uma compound, was killed during a violent crisis.
The unrest escalated further as houses, vehicles, and other property belonging to some residents were set ablaze by youths, spreading fear across the community and leaving families in shock.
A statement issued on Saturday by the Udumeze of Ohafia, Ezie Ohamoha Awa Orji Udonsi, and the Ohafia Council of Monarchs condemned the killing and the subsequent arson. The apex traditional body described the incident as gruesome and expressed heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased.
According to the statement, Mr. Igwe Akuma was reportedly preparing to get married in a few days before his untimely death. “The Udumeze condemns in its entirety the gruesome murder of a young Ohafian who was said to be getting married in a few days,” the statement read.
The council emphasised that there is no justification for the killing of an Ohafia son under any circumstances, no matter the provocation. It added that acts of violence and destruction are not the proper ways to begin a new year and urged community members to maintain peace.
Appealing for calm between the Ndi Owom and Ndi Uma compounds, the Udumeze said it was working closely with relevant security agencies to prevent further escalation of the crisis and to restore peace in the area.
Confirming the incident to DAILY POST, the Police Public Relations Officer of Abia State Command, DSP Maureen Chinaka, said the DPO of Ohafia Divisional Headquarters led officers to arrest several suspects involved in the crisis. She added that two police tactical teams were deployed to the scene to restore and maintain law and order, while the arrested suspects are currently undergoing interrogation.
The incident has heightened fears in the community, with residents calling for urgent interventions to prevent further clashes and ensure that perpetrators of the violence are brought to justice. Community leaders have also urged youths to exercise restraint and avoid taking the law into their own hands, stressing that peaceful dialogue and cooperation with security agencies are the only way to resolve disputes.
The tragic death of Mr. Akuma, coupled with the destruction of property, has left the community mourning and serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of unresolved tensions and disputes within local communities.
