Rising Nigerian Singer Destiny Boy Dies at 22

The Nigerian music industry is in mourning following the death of fast-rising Afrobeats singer Afeez Adeshina, popularly known as Destiny Boy.

Reports that the singer passed away at the age of 22.

News of his death began circulating on Sunday, January 18, 2026, after a social media post by prominent journalist Temilola Sobola announced the development. In the post, Sobola wrote, “Singer Destiny Boy has passed away. May his soul rest in peace.”

As of the time of this report, details surrounding the cause of Destiny Boy’s death remain unclear. Neither his family nor his management team has released an official statement to confirm the circumstances surrounding his passing, leaving fans and members of the public awaiting further clarification.

Destiny Boy rose to prominence at a young age and became known for his distinctive street-pop sound, which earned him recognition within Nigeria’s competitive music scene. He first gained widespread attention in 2019 after his Fuji-style cover of Davido’s hit song If went viral across social media platforms.

The viral success of the cover helped him build a loyal fan base and opened doors to greater visibility in the industry. He later released and performed several other covers of popular songs by notable Nigerian artistes, including Tekno, 2Baba, 9ice, and Small Doctor, further cementing his presence as a promising young talent.

Beyond music, the singer also attracted public attention for major milestones in his personal life. In November 2024, reports revealed that he had welcomed his first child at the age of 20.
