A fresh controversy has erupted over viral images purportedly showing President Bola Tinubu in a meeting with Rwandan President Paul Kagame in Paris, after observers noted that the pictures appear to have been generated by artificial intelligence.
The photographs, which circulated widely on social media on Sunday, bore a visible watermark from Grok, a generative AI chatbot developed by Elon Musk’s company, xAI. The watermark immediately drew attention and prompted questions about the authenticity of the reported meeting.
The meeting was first disclosed by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, who posted about it on Facebook. According to Onanuga, the two leaders held a private lunch in Paris where they discussed world affairs, Africa’s position in the shifting global order, and shared visions for the continent’s development.
“This afternoon, I had a private lunch with H. E. President Paul Kagame of Rwanda to discuss the current state of world affairs and advancing Africa in an ever-changing global landscape,” President Tinubu posted on 𝕏, formerly Twitter, attaching the image in question. The President’s Special Assistant on New Media, Dada Olusegun, also reposted the image, further amplifying its circulation.
Despite the attention, neither Onanuga nor other presidential aides have explained why an AI-generated image was used to depict the meeting. This lack of clarification has fueled speculation over whether the meeting actually took place or whether the image was intended as a symbolic representation of the leaders’ discussion.
Grok, the AI tool linked to the image, is capable of real-time search and image generation and is part of Elon Musk’s broader efforts in artificial intelligence through xAI. The incident highlights the increasing challenge of distinguishing authentic media from AI-generated content, particularly in high-profile political communications.
Observers and social media users have expressed mixed reactions. Some criticized the use of AI-generated imagery as misleading, while others suggested it could be a creative way to visualize diplomatic engagements. The controversy comes amid growing global concern over AI-generated deepfakes and their potential to distort public perception.
As conversations about AI and information integrity continue, the controversy surrounding President Tinubu’s Paris meeting underscores the need for clarity and transparency in official communications, particularly when digital tools are used to represent real-world events.
