A horrific incident has unfolded in Plateau State, Nigeria, where a pregnant woman abducted by gunmen has given birth in captivity after learning of her husband's killing. The woman, along with her daughter, was taken by gunmen who stormed their home in Kyaram community, Garga district, Kanam Local Government Area, on January 17, 2026.
According to reports, the gunmen shot and killed the woman's husband, Umar Rufa'i, before abducting her and her daughter. A few hours later, the kidnappers called relatives to inform them that the woman had given birth to a baby. The news has sent shockwaves through the community, with many expressing outrage and sadness over the brutal act.
"We are shocked and saddened by the brutal killing of Umar and the abduction of his wife and daughter," said Shehu Kanam, National Secretary of Kanam Development Association (KADA). "The report we received is that the bandits called and informed the family that the wife of the deceased gave birth while in captivity. This is very heartbreaking. Imagine the condition through which she delivered, not knowing what has happened to her husband, and the trauma she must be going through with the new baby."
The incident highlights the ongoing security challenges in Plateau State, with frequent reports of killings and abductions. KADA is calling on authorities to take immediate action to address the crisis, lamenting that despite appeals to the government, the situation remains unchanged.
"Garga district has been plagued by banditry and kidnapping, with frequent reports of killings and abductions," Kanam said. "The government and security agencies have not been able to curb the rising cases of abductions in the area. We urge the authorities to take immediate action to address this crisis and ensure the safe release of the abducted woman and her daughter. The family is in dire need of prayers and support during this difficult time."
The community is in mourning, with Umar Rufa'i buried according to Islamic rites on January 18, 2026. The incident has sparked widespread outrage and calls for increased security measures to protect citizens.
