Police Vow to Enforce Order Following Onitsha Market Closure in Anambra

The Anambra State Police Command has pledged to maintain peace, enforce lawful directives, and prevent any breach of public order across the state, particularly following the indefinite closure of markets in Onitsha.

The command’s spokesman, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, made the disclosure in a statement issued on Wednesday in Awka. He said that the Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, was present in Onitsha to reinforce public safety, ensure smooth compliance with government directives, and strengthen public confidence in law enforcement.

The market closures were ordered by Governor Chukwuma Soludo on Monday during an unscheduled visit, citing regulatory and security concerns in the city’s bustling commercial hub. The move has affected traders, commuters, and residents, prompting discussions about compliance, safety, and the economic impact of the closure.

SP Ikenga explained that the commissioner is conducting a comprehensive security assessment tour, supervising the deployment of police led joint security forces at key strategic locations, including market entrances, major roads, and other high traffic areas.

“This proactive engagement underscores our resolve to maintain peace, ensure compliance with lawful directives, and prevent any breach of public order,” Ikenga stated. He added that the security situation in Onitsha remains calm and assured residents, traders, and commuters that their safety is guaranteed, while urging full cooperation with law enforcement agencies.

The police initiative comes as part of a broader effort to address public safety concerns, prevent criminal activities, and maintain order in one of Nigeria’s busiest commercial centers. Residents and traders have been urged to follow official instructions and avoid acts that could escalate tensions, while authorities continue to monitor the situation closely.

The Anambra State Police Command also emphasized that any violations of the closure orders or disturbances of public order will be met with appropriate enforcement measures. The ongoing collaboration between state authorities and security agencies aims to ensure both the protection of lives and property, and the smooth resumption of economic activities in the future.
