The Ogun State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of the driver of the Lexus SUV carrying world boxing champion Anthony Joshua and two of his close friends, following a tragic road accident on Monday along the Lagos Ibadan Expressway near Danco.
State police spokesperson Oluseyi Babaseyi disclosed in a statement on Thursday that the driver is currently in custody as investigations into the accident continue. “The driver of the Lexus SUV in connection with the Anthony Joshua accident case is currently in custody. Investigations are ongoing,” the statement partly read.
The accident occurred around 11 a.m. when the vehicle, a Lexus SUV with registration number KRD 850 HN, reportedly collided with a stationary truck. The collision claimed the lives of two occupants of the car, identified as Ayodele Kelvin Olu, a 36-year-old Nigerian British citizen, and Gami Sina, a 36-year-old British citizen. The incident has shocked both local and international communities, highlighting concerns over road safety along major expressways in Nigeria.
Anthony Joshua and his mother survived the crash and were discharged from Lagoon Hospital, Ikoyi, on Wednesday after doctors confirmed they were clinically fit to continue recovery at home. The renowned boxer has reportedly been receiving support from family, friends, and fans during the period of recuperation.
In a joint statement, the Lagos and Ogun state governments expressed deep condolences to the families of the deceased, describing the accident as “painful and deeply unfortunate.” They prayed for eternal rest for the departed and strength for their loved ones to bear the irreparable loss.
The statement further revealed that Anthony Joshua and his mother visited a funeral home in Lagos on Wednesday to pay their final respects to the two late friends, whose bodies were being prepared for repatriation later that evening. The gesture underscores the personal impact of the accident on Joshua and his close circle.
Governors Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State and Babajide Sanwo Olu of Lagos State expressed appreciation to members of the public for their prayers, concern, and support following the accident. They also conveyed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for his fatherly support throughout the period. Additionally, the governors commended the doctors and medical personnel at Lagoon Hospital for their professionalism, dedication, and the quality of care provided to Anthony Joshua and other injured victims.
