Tragedy struck on New Year’s Day as a teenager, whose name has not been confirmed, died inside a swimming pool at a hotel in Owode-Ede, Osun State.
The incident reportedly occurred on Thursday at a hotel located along Osogbo-Gbongan Road, leading to distress among friends and family of the deceased. According to eyewitnesses, the teenager was confirmed dead at the scene, sparking anger and grief among those close to him.
Dissatisfaction with how the hotel management handled the situation prompted some family members and associates to return to the premises on Friday to stage a protest. Witnesses said the protesters were visibly upset and demanded answers from the hotel authorities regarding the circumstances surrounding the teenager’s death.
“The death was recorded in the hotel on January 1st. The deceased, a teenager, died in the swimming pool of the hotel. He was confirmed dead. But on Friday, some people, displeased with the manner in which the hotel management handled the situation, stormed the premises and staged a serious protest. Police and NSCDC later intervened, and the matter was resolved,” an eyewitness said in an interview with Saturday PUNCH.
When contacted, the Acting Police Public Relations Officer of the Osun Command, Emmanuel Giwa-Alade, confirmed the incident. He clarified that the protest was not a mob action but a response from the family to express grievances over the handling of the case.
“It wasn’t a mob action. It was the family of the victim who went back there to express their grievances, and when they arrived, the whole thing was later settled amicably. The victim died inside the hotel swimming pool,” Giwa-Alade said.
He added that police investigations into the incident had commenced. “Investigation is being carried out. We are on the matter, and whatever we find out, we will let the public know,” he said.
The tragic death has drawn attention to safety protocols in hotel facilities, particularly swimming pools, and raises questions about the level of supervision and preventive measures in such environments. Residents and social media users have expressed concern over how hotels manage safety, especially for minors.
Local authorities have called for stricter enforcement of safety regulations in hospitality establishments to prevent similar incidents in the future. Experts emphasise the importance of trained lifeguards, warning signs, and emergency response plans to avoid accidents in recreational facilities.
The incident continues to generate concern among residents of Osun State, highlighting the need for hotel operators to prioritise the safety of guests and ensure that such tragedies do not recur.
