Popular Nigerian actress Angela Okorie has been remanded at the Suleja Correctional Facility following allegations of defaming fellow Nollywood star Mercy Johnson.
The decision to remand Okorie was handed down by an Abuja court on Wednesday after her arrest. Details of the alleged defamation have not been fully disclosed.
Filmmaker Stanley Ontop expressed his concerns over the handling of the case, highlighting what he described as irregularities in the judicial process. He urged Mercy Johnson to pursue civil litigation, noting that defamation is generally a matter for civil court, not criminal detention.
Ontop wrote on Instagram, “Free @realangelaokorie now, irrespective of who is involved. If you feel they defamed your person, kindly approach a competent court and sue the person involved. Omo, when will the Nigeria police even learn to do their work well?”
He added, “So the judicial can work this fast? Tell me how you will sleep this night knowing fully well that your colleague is in prison. Angela, I will never forsake you.”
As of now, there has been no official statement from Angela Okorie’s legal team, and the court proceedings are ongoing.
