Nigerian Woman in US Appeals to Trump, Seeks Grace Period for Immigrants Amid ICE Crackdown

A Nigerian woman living in the United States has appealed to President Donald Trump to give immigrants adequate time to prepare for departure if his administration intends to remove them from the country, amid growing concerns over the conduct of Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents.

In a video that has since gone viral on social media, the elderly woman expressed deep distress over what she described as inhumane treatment of immigrants during recent enforcement operations. She referenced multiple videos showing ICE agents arresting individuals in public spaces and alleged that some of these actions have resulted in deaths and severe trauma for families.

Speaking emotionally, the woman said the images she watched left her heartbroken, particularly as a mother with a teenage son. She recounted how a video sent to her by her child made her consider withdrawing her son from school and returning to Nigeria out of fear for his safety.

According to her, ICE agents appear to operate without regard for whether individuals are citizens, documented immigrants, or otherwise, noting that some people who identified themselves as United States citizens were allegedly treated harshly during arrests. She argued that the manner in which immigrants are being handled has created widespread fear within communities.

The woman also highlighted the role immigrants play in the American economy, stating that many essential jobs, including caregiving and healthcare roles, are largely filled by immigrants. She claimed that United States citizens are often unwilling or unable to perform such work, particularly in nursing homes and care facilities.

She said that if the intention is for immigrants to leave America, the government should state it clearly, adding that immigrants deserve time to organise their lives, secure their belongings, and reunite with families back home. She specifically requested a grace period of at least one year to allow families to prepare, rather than being subjected to sudden arrests.

She further compared the level of fear immigrants currently face in the United States with conditions in Nigeria, stating that while her home country has challenges, the level of anxiety caused by immigration enforcement in the United States feels overwhelming.

The video has generated widespread reactions online, with many users expressing sympathy for her concerns, while others debated United States immigration policies and enforcement methods. As of the time of reporting, neither the White House nor Immigration and Customs Enforcement had issued an official response to the woman’s remarks or the allegations raised in the video.

The incident adds to ongoing national and international scrutiny of United States immigration enforcement practices and their impact on immigrant communities.
