Nigeria Police Suspend Nationwide Enforcement of Tinted Glass Permit Following Court Order

The Nigeria Police Force has suspended the nationwide enforcement of the Tinted Glass Permit policy after an interim court order restrained the action, barely days before the planned resumption of enforcement.

The Force had announced on 15 December 2025 that enforcement of the policy would resume from 2 January 2026. The decision, according to the police, was part of ongoing efforts to strengthen public safety, curb criminal activities, and enhance internal security across the country. Motorists were advised to regularize their tinted glass permits ahead of the enforcement date.

However, the enforcement plan was halted after the Nigeria Police Force was served with an interim order issued on 17 December 2025 in Suit No. HOR FHR M 31 2025. The order restrained the police from proceeding with the enforcement pending the hearing and determination of the substantive suit or until the order is vacated by the court.

Confirming the development in a statement issued on Thursday, the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, disclosed that the police had entered appearance in the matter, raised preliminary objections, and formally applied for the vacation of the interim order.

He further stated that the court has adjourned the case to 20 January 2026 for further proceedings.

In strict compliance with the subsisting court order, the Nigeria Police Force has placed the enforcement of the Tinted Glass Permit policy on hold nationwide, pending the decision of the court.

The Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, reaffirmed the Force’s commitment to the rule of law, stressing that the police would always respect court decisions while carrying out their constitutional responsibilities of protecting lives and property.

Despite the suspension, the police emphasized that security operations across the country would continue. The Force noted that it would rely on lawful, intelligence driven strategies to address security challenges and maintain public order while awaiting the court’s ruling.

The Nigeria Police Force also assured members of the public that clear guidance and further updates would be issued after the court’s determination, in the interest of national security and public confidence.
