The Lagos State Government has officially announced Monday, January 12, 2026, as the resumption date for the second term of the 2025/2026 academic session for all public and private schools in the state. The directive also applies to government owned technical colleges and institutions under the state education ministry.
The announcement, released on Wednesday in a statement by the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, aligns with the approved academic calendar for Lagos State schools. Authorities emphasized that schools are expected to commence full academic and administrative activities immediately upon resumption to ensure the smooth continuation of the school year.
The Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Jamiu Alli Balogun, urged school proprietors, principals, and administrators to strictly observe all approved public health and safety regulations as students return to classrooms. He noted that the government has deployed monitoring teams to schools across Lagos to assess adherence to safety protocols.
"All educational institutions must strictly comply with the required public health protocols as schools reopen," the commissioner said. He added that these inspections are designed to protect the health, safety, and wellbeing of students, teaching staff, and non teaching personnel, ensuring a safe learning environment for everyone.
The Ministry also took the opportunity to commend teachers, parents, and guardians for their continued support and cooperation, describing their contributions as vital to maintaining stability within the education sector. Officials encouraged parents and guardians to ensure that pupils and students are prepared for the new term, both academically and socially, to facilitate a smooth transition as schools resume full operations.
In addition, the ministry emphasized the importance of effective school administration and planning. Principals and school administrators were advised to review lesson plans, ensure that learning materials are in place, and implement measures to address any learning gaps that may have emerged during the term break. Authorities also encouraged schools to continue promoting student wellbeing and extracurricular engagement as part of holistic development.
The statement, signed by Kayode Sutton, Deputy Director of Public Affairs at the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education and dated January 7, 2026, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to providing a safe, structured, and conducive learning environment for all students in Lagos State.
With the second term set to resume, stakeholders across the state are preparing for what officials describe as a smooth and productive term, while the government continues to monitor compliance with all safety and academic standards across public and private institutions.
