Kidnappers Kill Younger Brother, Hold Doctor Sibling Captive in Edo

Tragedy has struck in Edo State following the killing of a younger brother by suspected kidnappers, while his elder sibling, a medical doctor, remains in captivity, according to reports from Punch Newspapers.

The two brothers were reportedly abducted by armed men while travelling along a major route in the state. The assailants allegedly targeted them for ransom, taking them from their vehicle and disappearing into nearby forests and rural areas. After days of anxiety and frantic efforts by family members to secure their release, the kidnappers reportedly carried out their threat, killing the younger brother and leaving his body at a location later discovered by residents.

Sources told Punch that the kidnappers had demanded a substantial ransom from the family and threatened severe consequences if the demands were not met. Despite negotiations and pleas from relatives, the younger sibling was killed, while the doctor remains in captivity under uncertain conditions.

The deceased’s body was later recovered and taken to a morgue, throwing the family and surrounding community into mourning. Residents described the incident as heartbreaking, noting that the victims were peaceful and hardworking individuals who were respected in their community.

Confirming the development, the Edo State Police Command said it had launched an intensified manhunt for the perpetrators. Security operatives have increased patrols and surveillance in the area, and intelligence-led operations are being carried out to track the kidnappers’ movements. The police assured the public that efforts are ongoing to rescue the abducted doctor and bring the culprits to justice.

The incident has reignited concerns over the rising wave of kidnapping cases in Edo State and other parts of the country. Community leaders and residents have called on the government to strengthen security measures, particularly on highways and in rural communities, which have become frequent targets of criminal gangs.

Family members of the victims have appealed to authorities and security agencies to do everything possible to rescue the remaining captive alive. Local residents have also urged community vigilance, stressing that public cooperation is key to tackling kidnapping and improving security in the region.

This killing adds to the growing list of kidnap-related deaths in Nigeria, highlighting the urgent need for sustained action against criminal networks terrorizing innocent citizens. Analysts warn that unless structural security measures are strengthened, incidents like these may continue to threaten public safety and disrupt lives across vulnerable communities.
