Several soldiers are feared to have lost their lives after suspected fighters of the Islamic State West Africa Province, ISWAP, attacked a military base in Sabon Gari, Damboa Local Government Area of Borno State.
The attack reportedly occurred on Thursday when the insurgents launched a sudden assault on the military formation, opening heavy gunfire and engaging troops and members of the Civilian Joint Task Force in a fierce exchange. Sources said the attackers overpowered the base, leading to significant casualties among security personnel.
A military source confirmed the incident, stating that many soldiers were killed, although the exact number of casualties is yet to be determined. During the raid, the insurgents reportedly set armoured tanks and several military vehicles on fire before fleeing the scene.
It was also gathered that the attackers escaped with an unspecified quantity of ammunition and other military items. ISWAP later claimed responsibility for the attack and released a video allegedly showing its fighters firing toward the military base.
The incident comes amid renewed insurgent activity in the region and follows another deadly attack earlier in the week. On Monday, January 26, 2026, seven military personnel, including a newly promoted Lieutenant Colonel, were reportedly killed when insurgents ambushed a convoy travelling from Maiduguri to Damasak in Mobbar Local Government Area.
Military sources said the ambush involved the use of explosives and heavy gunfire, leaving several soldiers injured, while some personnel were declared missing. Although some bodies were later recovered, the whereabouts of others remain unknown.
Security experts say ISWAP has continued to expand its influence around the Lake Chad region since the death of former Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau, aided by defections from rival factions.
Residents of affected communities have expressed fear over the recurring attacks and have urged authorities to intensify security operations to protect both soldiers and civilians.
