Gunmen have reportedly abducted no fewer than 25 residents during a late night attack on Turmuzawa village, an agrarian community in Bungudu Local Government Area of Zamfara State.
The attack, which occurred on Wednesday night, was reported by Zagazola Makama, a counter insurgency publication that monitors security developments in the Lake Chad region and northern Nigeria.
According to accounts from residents, the heavily armed assailants stormed the community in large numbers at about 11.25 p.m. in the Kotorkoshi district of the village. The attackers reportedly fired sporadically into the air, creating panic and forcing residents to flee for safety.
Witnesses said the gunmen then moved from house to house, dragging victims out of their homes before marching them into the surrounding bushes. Many villagers were said to have escaped under the cover of darkness, while others were taken away by the attackers.
In addition to the abductions, the armed men reportedly rustled 14 cows during the operation, driving the animals into nearby forests before fleeing the area.
They came suddenly and overwhelmed the village. People were running in different directions. Some managed to escape, but others were taken away, and the cattle were driven into the forest, a resident was quoted as saying.
Following the incident, families of the abducted persons have appealed to security agencies and the Zamfara State Government for urgent intervention to ensure the safe release of their loved ones.
Zagazola further reported that troops of Operation Fansan Yanma of the Nigerian Army, in collaboration with other security agencies, have launched coordinated operations across the area to rescue the abducted victims and recover the rustled livestock.
Efforts to obtain official confirmation were unsuccessful as of Saturday, as Yazid Abubakar, spokesperson of the Zamfara State Police Command, did not immediately respond to enquiries regarding the incident.
