Former Labour Party vice presidential candidate, Senator Yusuf Datti Baba Ahmed, has firmly dismissed reports suggesting that he may defect from the Labour Party following Peter Obi’s recent political realignment.
Speaking with journalists in Abuja on Wednesday at the Labour Party national headquarters, Baba Ahmed made it clear that he has no intention of leaving the party or joining Obi in his move to the African Democratic Congress, ADC.
The former Kaduna North senator emphasized that the Labour Party remains his political home, noting that it was the platform that produced him as vice presidential candidate in the 2023 general election. According to him, his political journey and future ambitions are tied to the party and not to emerging coalitions or shifting political alliances.
Peter Obi, a former Anambra State governor and presidential candidate of the Labour Party, recently announced his alignment with the ADC as part of a broader opposition coalition aimed at challenging the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, ahead of the 2027 elections.
However, Baba Ahmed said he is not convinced that the ADC led coalition represents the kind of political alternative Nigerians are looking for. He described some of the politicians promoting the platform as disgruntled, adding that their approach does not reflect the urgent need for purposeful leadership and sustainable national development.
While acknowledging the political partnership he shared with Obi during the 2023 presidential race, Baba Ahmed stressed that political decisions must be guided by conviction, ideology, and long term goals rather than personal loyalty.
He reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening the Labour Party, stating that he believes the party still has a critical role to play in offering Nigerians a credible and principled alternative.
Baba Ahmed also reiterated his readiness to serve Nigeria in any capacity as the country prepares for the 2027 general election, noting that his focus remains on national development and good governance.
