The Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, has announced that the Federal Government plans to install CCTV cameras along all federal highways across Nigeria to boost security and improve road safety.
Umahi praised President Bola Tinubu for his leadership and commitment to addressing long-standing road challenges in the Southeast, noting that previous issues with abandoned contracts have now been broken, and work on critical highways is progressing.
Speaking over the weekend during the launch of stricter engineering standards, shorter project deadlines, and new highway technology, Umahi highlighted the progress made on the Enugu-Onitsha Highway, saying contractors are performing well.
He added that security measures will go beyond bridges. “Our commitment to deploying CCTV, solar lighting, and dedicated patrol vehicles extends to every completed federal highway. Our goal is to respond to incidents within five minutes,” he said.
The minister also disclosed that the government has banned all mining activities within a 10-kilometre radius of bridges. The directive, approved by the Federal Executive Council, will be enforced through patrols on roads, bridges, and waterways to protect infrastructure and ensure the safety of commuters.
According to Umahi, these initiatives are part of a broader plan to guarantee optimum highway security, enforce government standards, and integrate modern technology in highway monitoring nationwide.
