Suspected Boko Haram terrorists have attacked Tarfa Village in Hawul Local Government Area of Borno State, killing a pastor, Musa Umoru, and four other residents.
According to Punch, the bandits stormed the community on motorbikes around 7 p.m., firing sporadically and setting buildings ablaze. They reportedly operated in the village for over an hour, causing widespread panic among the inhabitants.
The Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria, Borno State chapter, Rev. John Bakeni, confirmed the attack and said that residents had fled the village in fear for their lives. He told Punch:
“Truly, there was an attack yesterday evening in a village called Tarfa. I was just informed that five people were killed, including the EYN pastor there. The entire village was burnt down.”
A villager who escaped the attack described the scene as devastating and called on the government to intervene promptly.
“It was a devastating attack. They stormed the community en masse and set houses on fire, including shops. We are under threat. They killed five people, including Pastor Evangelist Musa Umoru. As I speak, I have left Tarfa. We need government intervention.”
The attack has intensified concerns about the ongoing insecurity in Borno State, where communities have repeatedly faced assaults from terrorist and bandit groups. Many residents continue to live in fear, with some fleeing their homes to escape the violence.
When contacted, the spokesperson of the Borno State Police Command, Nahum Daso, said he would need time to verify the incident and promised to provide further updates once confirmed.
Security experts note that attacks like this underscore the urgent need for increased deployment of security operatives, better intelligence, and proactive measures to protect vulnerable communities in the region.
The tragic incident has renewed calls from civil society groups, religious leaders, and residents for the government to strengthen security in Borno State and ensure the protection of lives and property in areas prone to terrorist attacks.
