The body of a young man who had earlier been reported missing has been recovered from the Obalende Underbridge Canal on Lagos Island, several days after he was last seen.
Sources disclosed that the deceased, whose identity has not yet been officially released by authorities, had been living under the Obalende Bridge for an extended period. He was reportedly familiar to residents and passersby in the area and was often seen around the underbridge environment.
According to information gathered, concern grew among people in the vicinity after the man had not been sighted for several days. A search was later carried out, leading to the discovery of his lifeless body inside the canal beneath the bridge.
Officials of the Lagos Environmental Sanitation Corps, LAGESC, also known as the Kick Against Indiscipline unit, were immediately alerted to the development. Upon arrival at the scene, the officials evacuated the body from the canal and transported it to the mortuary at the Lagos General Hospital for preservation and further examination.
A LAGESC official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said preliminary observations suggested that the man may have accidentally fallen into the canal. The official added that the deceased was suspected to have been under the influence of illicit drugs at the time of the incident, which may have impaired his judgment or balance.
“It appears he slipped into the canal while under the influence of drugs. Because he lived alone under the bridge, no one immediately noticed that he was missing. It was only after some days that people began to search for him, leading to the discovery of the body,” the official said.
Authorities stated that investigations are ongoing to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the incident. They also noted that efforts would be made to trace possible relatives of the deceased and complete all necessary documentation in line with standard procedures. Further details are expected to be made public as investigations continue.
