The All Progressives Congress, APC, Rivers State chapter has strongly rejected the move by the State House of Assembly to impeach Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, describing the action as unacceptable and capable of destabilizing the state.
The Rivers State House of Assembly on Thursday commenced impeachment proceedings against Governor Fubara over alleged misconduct. Reports indicate that an official impeachment notice is expected to be issued to the governor and his deputy within the next seven days as part of the constitutional process.
Reacting to the development, the Rivers APC condemned the move and warned against actions that could plunge the state into a political crisis. The party’s position was contained in a statement issued by its Publicity Secretary, Darlington Nwauju.
Nwauju stated that the party firmly rejects the resort to impeachment, stressing that it would be wrong for the APC to remain silent in the face of what it considers an unjustified attempt to remove the elected leadership of the state.
“Our position as at today on this matter is that we solemnly reject the resort to an impeachment process against our governor and his deputy,” he said.
He further alleged that the impeachment move appeared to be a continuation of unresolved internal conflicts originating from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, warning that such disputes should not be allowed to resurface and disrupt governance in Rivers State.
“It will be totally untenable for our party to keep quiet when an obvious hangover from strifes that occurred within the PDP are allowed to resurface in our great party,” Nwauju added.
The APC spokesperson emphasized that the ruling party would resist any move capable of destabilizing the state government, insisting that Rivers State remains under APC leadership and should not be subjected to unnecessary political turmoil.
He added that the party will do everything possible to ensure that the Government of Rivers State, which is an APC government, is not destabilized.
The development comes amid heightened political tension in Rivers State, with stakeholders closely watching the unfolding situation and its potential implications for governance and stability in the state.
