A nursing student of the University of Ilorin, UNILORIN, who was earlier reported missing has been found in the custody of the Nigeria Police Force after five days, sparking public concern and questions over police procedures.
The development was made public on Tuesday by social media user Akinola Olanrewaju, popularly known as @bigblarry on X, who had actively drawn attention to the student’s disappearance. In his post, Olanrewaju disclosed that the student was held by the police for five days without being granted access to her phone or any form of communication with her family or the public.
He described the situation as troubling and questioned how a person could be detained for several days without informing relatives or allowing basic communication, especially after she had been widely declared missing.
The student was initially reported missing after she reportedly left home on January 22 and could not be reached thereafter. Her disappearance triggered widespread concern, leading to multiple social media posts and public appeals for information. Another X user, identified as @Yemihazan, had earlier shared a missing person notice urging members of the public to assist in locating the nursing student.
Following the confirmation that she was in police custody, the revelation generated mixed reactions online, with many Nigerians expressing shock and demanding accountability. Several users raised concerns about the legality of holding an individual without access to communication and the emotional distress caused to the student’s family and loved ones during the period she was unaccounted for.
As of the time of filing this report, the Nigeria Police Force has not released an official statement clarifying the circumstances surrounding the student’s detention or addressing the allegation that she was denied access to communication throughout the five days she was held.
The incident has continued to fuel conversations about due process, human rights, and transparency within law enforcement agencies, with calls for authorities to provide clear explanations and ensure the protection of citizens’ rights while in custody.
