Woman Accused of Drowning Six-Year-Old Niece Over Jealousy, Confesses to Other Murders in India

A shocking case of familial violence has emerged from Panipat, northern India, where a woman has been accused of drowning her six-year-old niece during a wedding celebration because the child “looked prettier than her.”

The victim, identified as Vidhi, had attended the wedding with her parents, her 10-month-old brother, and her grandmother on Monday, December 1. The family was reportedly celebrating when Vidhi’s father received a distressing phone call informing him that his daughter had gone missing. This prompted a frantic search by family members.

After about an hour, Vidhi’s grandmother, Omwati, discovered the child in a nearby storeroom, submerged in water. She was immediately rushed to NC Medical College, where she was pronounced dead. The tragic incident sent shockwaves through the family and the local community.

Authorities arrested Poonam, the woman accused of committing the act, shortly after the incident. During police questioning, Poonam reportedly admitted to drowning Vidhi, explaining that jealousy had driven her actions. She allegedly told investigators that she “didn’t want anyone to look more beautiful” than her at the wedding.

Superintendent of Police Bhupender Singh said that according to investigators, the crime took place while the wedding guests were away from the house. Poonam allegedly saw Vidhi climbing the stairs, followed her to the terrace, engaged her in conversation, and then placed her in a plastic tub filled with water outside the storeroom. She reportedly drowned the child, locked the door from the outside, and left the scene, returning to join the celebrations.

The case has taken an even darker turn, as Poonam allegedly confessed to previously killing three other children, including another niece and her own son, using similar methods. Local reports indicate that in 2023, she allegedly murdered her sister-in-law’s nine-year-old daughter before killing her own son, supposedly to “avoid suspicion.” In August of the same year, she allegedly killed another young girl in a nearby town, again citing jealousy over the child’s beauty.

Police stated that the family had previously considered these deaths to be accidental, allowing Poonam to commit these crimes repeatedly without detection. Authorities are now investigating a disturbing pattern of deliberate killings motivated by envy and obsession with appearance.

The Panipat police have confirmed that the investigation is ongoing, and additional charges may be filed as more details emerge. The case has drawn nationwide attention, with many expressing horror at the repeated nature of the killings and the alleged motivations behind them. Legal experts have emphasized the severity of the crimes, noting that the repeated acts suggest premeditation and a deep psychological component.

This tragic series of events has sparked widespread discussion in India, highlighting issues of child safety, familial trust, and the importance of vigilance in domestic environments. Authorities have urged communities to report suspicious behavior and ensure children are closely supervised, particularly in large family gatherings.
