A young Nigerian woman has shared a terrifying firsthand account of a violent bandit attack during a night journey from Lagos to the East, describing how her bus came under heavy gunfire in what many passengers believed would be their final moments. Her emotional testimony, posted on TikTok, has gone viral and revived nationwide concern about the escalating insecurity on major highways.
According to her narration, the attack happened in the middle of the night at a point along the highway where the road was completely deserted. She said the bus passengers were already half asleep when gunmen suddenly emerged from the darkness and began shooting at the vehicle without warning. The shots were aimed directly at the front, a clear attempt to force the bus to stop by targeting the driver.
She recounted that the first few bullets struck the bonnet and windscreen, sending passengers into panic. People screamed, ducked and held on to their seats as the gunfire intensified. She described hearing the sharp crack of bullets tearing into metal, with shattered glass flying across the bus. Several passengers began praying loudly because they believed the attackers would overpower them.
Despite the chaos, the driver remained exceptionally composed. Instead of slowing down, he stepped harder on the accelerator and began swerving from lane to lane to avoid the gunmen. She said the driver showed remarkable courage and stayed focused even as bullets shattered the windows and pierced the sides of the bus. He refused to stop and was determined to outrun the attackers.
According to her, this quick thinking saved their lives. After several tense minutes of high speed driving under constant fire, the bus eventually escaped the ambush. The passengers, still trembling, burst into tears of relief. She explained that many of them had already accepted that they might not survive and that the moment they realised the danger had passed felt unbelievable.
Her video has triggered intense reactions across social media. Many Nigerians said her story reflects the disturbing reality of travelling across the country. One commenter wrote that the account was frightening and said that Nigeria was becoming increasingly unsafe. Another praised the driver and called him a hero who risked his life to save others.
The viral testimony has once again highlighted growing concerns about night travel in Nigeria. Armed attacks, kidnappings and roadside ambushes have been reported with increasing frequency, especially on routes connecting major cities. Travellers say they now fear embarking on long distance trips because of the rising number of security incidents.
Security experts and civil society groups have renewed calls for urgent government intervention. They insist that without stronger highway patrols, rapid response units and improved intelligence gathering, more lives will remain at risk.
For many Nigerians, the question remains. How many more travellers must go through such horrifying experiences before meaningful action is taken to make the highways safe again.
