The US Department of War has released video footage showing recent military air strikes targeting terrorist groups in Sokoto State, northwest Nigeria. The release comes amid heightened attention on US counterterrorism operations in the region.
Earlier, US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth confirmed that the air strikes had successfully hit terrorist targets in Nigeria, describing the operation as deadly and precise. The US Africa Command later provided further confirmation, stating that the strikes were coordinated with Nigerian authorities and successfully targeted elements of the Islamic State Sahel Province.
President Donald Trump described the strikes as fulfilling a promise he made last month to take decisive action against terrorists he claims are responsible for killing innocent Christians in northern Nigeria. While the strikes have been labeled powerful and deadly, official casualty figures have not yet been released.
Security expert Brant Philip suggested that the strikes may have been launched from the USS Paul Ignatius using Tomahawk missiles. He noted that such naval launched missiles demonstrate the United States’ ability to strike high value targets with precision, minimizing risk to civilians when conducted in coordination with local forces.
The Nigerian government, through its Ministry of Foreign Affairs, confirmed that the operation was successful and emphasized that the strikes were conducted in collaboration with US forces to combat terrorism in the region. This cooperation reflects ongoing efforts to address growing threats posed by extremist groups such as the Islamic State Sahel Province and Boko Haram in northern Nigeria.
The video released by the US Department of War shows the missile launch, apparently from a naval vessel, and is intended to demonstrate the effectiveness of the operation. Analysts note that the strikes signal a continued US commitment to counterterrorism efforts in Africa, particularly in regions where extremist groups threaten civilian populations and regional stability.
As the situation develops, both US and Nigerian authorities are expected to provide further updates, including potential casualty figures and assessments of the operation’s overall impact on terrorist networks in Sokoto and surrounding areas.
