Yobe State has been rocked by a tragic road accident that claimed the lives of seven passengers and left four others with varying degrees of injuries. The incident occurred along the Badejo axis on December 26, 2025, at approximately 4:30 p.m., according to the Yobe State Police Command.
SP Dungus Abdulkarim, the Public Relations Officer of the Command, confirmed the accident in a statement, revealing that the Sharon bus involved in the crash was transporting passengers from Lawanti in Akko Local Government Area, Gombe State, to Maiduguri, Borno State. The bus was reportedly carrying a mix of commuters, including traders, students, and other passengers traveling for personal or business purposes.
Preliminary investigations indicated that the bus, driven by Gambo Abbo, suffered a sudden rear tyre burst while in motion. The mechanical failure caused the driver to lose control, forcing the vehicle off the road and into the bush. Eyewitnesses at the scene described a chaotic aftermath, with locals rushing to help rescue passengers from the wreckage before emergency services arrived.
The Commissioner of Police, Emmanuel Ado, expressed his deepest condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and wished the injured a speedy and full recovery. He emphasized the Yobe State Police Command’s unwavering commitment to ensuring road safety and the protection of commuters across the state.
The police have called on motorists to strictly adhere to traffic rules, avoid speeding, and refrain from reckless driving. Authorities also stressed the importance of proper vehicle maintenance, particularly checking tyres and brakes regularly, to prevent similar tragedies.
A full investigation into the accident has been launched to determine whether additional factors, such as road conditions or vehicle overload, contributed to the crash. The outcome of the investigation is expected to guide future safety measures and policy enforcement to reduce fatal road accidents in the state.
Residents and travellers in Yobe have expressed concerns over the increasing number of road accidents, urging government authorities to implement stricter road safety campaigns and improve emergency response infrastructure to save lives.
