The Federal Government under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially declared December 25 and 26, 2025, as well as January 1, 2026, as public holidays to commemorate the Christmas, Boxing Day, and New Year celebrations.
The announcement was made in a statement issued by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Dr Magdalene Ajani. According to the statement, the declaration was approved and announced on behalf of the Federal Government by the Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji Ojo.
In his message, the minister extended warm Christmas and New Year greetings to Christians in Nigeria and across the world. He also conveyed goodwill to all Nigerians as they prepare to mark the end of the year and welcome the beginning of a new one.
Dr Tunji Ojo urged Christians to reflect deeply on the virtues of love, peace, humility, and sacrifice, as exemplified by the birth of Jesus Christ. He emphasized that these values are vital to fostering unity, tolerance, and peaceful coexistence among Nigerians, especially at a time when the nation continues to face various social and security challenges.
The minister further called on Nigerians, irrespective of their religious or ethnic backgrounds, to use the festive period as an opportunity to pray for peace, security, and the continued progress of the country. He encouraged citizens to remain supportive of the Federal Government’s efforts toward national development, unity, and social cohesion.
According to him, the Christmas season and the New Year provide a chance for Nigerians to strengthen the bonds of unity, extend compassion to one another, and renew their collective commitment to nation building.
Dr Tunji Ojo also advised Nigerians to celebrate responsibly, urging citizens to remain law abiding, security conscious, and moderate in their festivities. He stressed the importance of cooperating with security agencies to ensure a peaceful and safe celebration across the country.
The minister concluded by wishing all Nigerians a joyful Christmas celebration and a prosperous and fulfilling New Year.
