The Kwara State Police Command has successfully apprehended three suspected armed bandits as part of ongoing efforts to combat violent crime and insecurity across the state.
State Police Commissioner Adekimi Ojo made the disclosure during a security summit organized by the command in Ilorin on Wednesday. According to him, the suspects were arrested at Banni axis in Baruten Local Government Area, a hotspot for criminal activities, and police operatives recovered 54 rounds of AK-47 rifle ammunition from their possession.
Commissioner Ojo emphasized that this operation is part of a wider crackdown on armed groups operating within the state. He assured residents that other suspects have been apprehended and are currently undergoing profiling and further investigations.
The commissioner stressed that public safety is not the responsibility of security agencies alone, but a collective effort that requires strong collaboration with local communities. “Security is everybody’s business. We cannot achieve the desired results without working closely with the communities,” he said.
He highlighted that the police security summit was designed to engage stakeholders including traditional leaders, civil society representatives, and community members in order to develop practical solutions to the evolving security challenges facing the state. “The aim is to harness ideas and insights from stakeholders and create actionable strategies that strengthen community policing and enhance public safety,” Ojo added.
While acknowledging challenges such as manpower shortages, limited vehicles, and logistical constraints, the commissioner reiterated that community cooperation is the most critical factor in maintaining law and order. “Even if we had a million police personnel, it would not be enough to secure the state without the active support of residents,” he said.
This arrest underscores the Kwara State Police Command’s commitment to proactive policing, especially in rural areas where banditry and armed robbery remain persistent threats. Commissioner Ojo urged residents to remain vigilant, report suspicious activities, and collaborate with law enforcement agencies to ensure a safe environment for all.
The operation and subsequent arrests are being seen as a major step in the state’s ongoing strategy to curb violent crime, protect citizens, and restore confidence in law enforcement efforts throughout Kwara State.
