A shocking murder in Russia has left the nation horrified, with authorities calling it one of the most gruesome cases in recent memory. Dmitry Luchin, 23 at the time of the crime, was convicted of murdering his 45-year-old partner, Olga Budunova, in 2018. The case drew national attention due to the extreme violence and acts of cannibalism involved.
According to court records, Luchin visited Budunova under the pretext of celebrating International Women’s Day. After sharing wine together, he violently attacked her, smashing a bottle over her head and killing her almost instantly. He then methodically dismembered her body using a meat cleaver.
Authorities said Luchin engaged in acts of cannibalism, roasting pieces of Budunova’s brain before consuming them and drinking her blood. He mutilated her further by removing her stomach and ears, placing one ear in her mouth and the other in the household cat’s bowl. He also wrote insults across her body using blood and purple nail polish. Investigators noted that Luchin used Budunova’s blood to draw symbols on the door, allegedly as part of satanic rituals.
Despite the horrifying nature of the crime, Luchin reportedly told police he had eaten the brain because he “liked the taste.” Prosecutors also revealed that he had a deep obsession with notorious serial killers and spent hours on websites dedicated to violent crime.
During his trial, Luchin shocked the court by reciting a bizarre poem from inside the metal cage in which he claimed he was “no maniac, murderer or cannibal,” describing himself instead as a “student, sportsman and poet.” Judge Alexey Stanovsky had to interrupt him as he rambled about the infamous Soviet serial killer Andrei Chikatilo.
Psychiatric evaluations concluded that Luchin was mentally fit to stand trial. He was ultimately convicted of murder with “special cruelty” and sentenced to 19 years in a harsh regime penal colony.
Neighbours of Budunova described the scene inside her flat as indescribably horrifying. One told reporters, “It was like something from another world. No human could do what he did.” The brutality of the crime and the ritualistic elements involved have left a lasting impression on the local community and shocked the country.
Authorities say the case highlights the dangers of obsession with violent media and the need for monitoring individuals with extreme criminal tendencies. Luchin’s sentence aims to deliver justice for Budunova while preventing any possibility of him committing such acts in the future.
