Police Recover Firearms, Vehicle, and Cash After Shoot-Out with Criminals in Anambra

The Anambra State Police Command has recovered firearms, a vehicle, and suspected stolen cash following a shoot-out with fleeing criminals in Abagana, Njikoka Local Government Area.

Items recovered by the police include one pump-action rifle, one locally fabricated single-barrel rifle, an ash-coloured Toyota Highlander with registration number UWN 680 PE, suspected stolen cash totaling ₦636,700, and other incriminating items believed to be linked to criminal activities in the area.

According to a statement released by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the recovery followed the abandonment of the suspects’ operational vehicle after it was involved in an accident during a hot pursuit by police operatives.

“The operatives of the Anambra State Commissioner of Police Special Patrol, at about 5:00 pm on December 16, 2025, during an offensive security operation in Abagana, recovered one pump-action rifle, one locally fabricated single-barrel rifle, one ash Toyota Highlander with registration number UWN 680 PE, suspected stolen cash amounting to ₦636,700, and other incriminating items,” Ikenga said.

He added that the suspects managed to escape during the operation, but intelligence-led tracking and patrols have been intensified to ensure their apprehension. “Further developments will be communicated in due course,” he added, assuring the public that the command is committed to proactive policing.

SP Ikenga reassured residents of the command’s dedication to maintaining law and order and protecting lives and property. “The Anambra State Police Command reassures Ndi Anambra of its commitment to proactive policing, the maintenance of law and order, and the safeguarding of lives and property across the state,” he said.

The incident is part of a series of security operations carried out by the command in recent weeks to combat armed robbery, kidnappings, and other criminal activities. Earlier, on December 10, 2025, the police arrested a 26-year-old armed robbery suspect, Ugochukwu Uzor, during an offensive operation at Iyiowa Odekpe in Ogbaru Local Government Area. Operatives of the Rapid Response Squad, Awkuzu, apprehended Uzor after he sustained injuries during the operation.

A locally made Beretta pistol and 11 rounds of live ammunition were recovered from the suspect. Uzor allegedly confessed to being the leader of several criminal gangs operating in Anambra State and neighbouring states, highlighting the interconnected nature of crime in the region.

The latest recovery in Abagana highlights the ongoing efforts of the Anambra State Police to dismantle criminal networks, recover stolen property, and ensure the safety of residents. Police officials have called on the public to continue providing credible information that could lead to the arrest of fleeing suspects and further strengthen community security.

These operations demonstrate the command’s proactive approach to combating crime, particularly in areas where criminal activity has been on the rise. Authorities have also emphasized the importance of community cooperation in reporting suspicious activities to prevent future incidents.

The Anambra State Police Command continues to assure residents that all efforts are being made to restore security, apprehend criminals, and maintain peace across the state as the festive season approaches.
