The Inspector General of Police has directed all police commands across Nigeria to strengthen security for judges and court facilities following new instructions issued by the Presidency.
According to a wireless message circulated on December 8, 2025, by the IGP’s Secretariat in Abuja, Commissioners of Police in all 36 states, the Federal Capital Territory, zonal commands and specialised units were instructed to prioritise the protection of judicial institutions within their jurisdictions.
The communication, which was addressed to senior police officers including Deputy Inspectors General, zonal Assistant Inspectors General and heads of specialised formations, stressed the need for immediate compliance. Commands without existing Judges Protection Units were ordered to establish them without delay.
Officers were instructed to ensure that all judges and court facilities within their Area of Responsibility receive continuous and adequate protection. The message also directed commands to confirm compliance promptly. It described the order as very important and immediate.
The directive follows broader presidential guidance on the restructuring of police deployment nationwide, including the withdrawal of personnel from general escort and guard duties. The move signals a shift toward more focused protection of key judicial figures and institutions, amid concerns about the safety of the justice system.
No additional details were provided regarding the specific threats or incidents that may have prompted the heightened security measures.
