Police Foil Planned Cult Clash in Anambra, Arrest Two Suspects, Recover Firearm

Operatives of the Anambra State Police Command have thwarted a planned cult-related clash in Enugwu Ukwu, Njikoka Local Government Area, following an intelligence-led operation that led to the arrest of two suspected cult members.

The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, disclosed the development in a statement issued on Saturday in Awka. According to Ikenga, officers attached to the Special Anti Cult Squad received actionable intelligence in the early hours of December 4, 2025, indicating that a notorious cult group was assembling for a violent showdown.

Acting swiftly, the operatives mobilized to the identified location, where they successfully intercepted the suspects. Those arrested were identified as Oluebube Ifediorah, 21, and Offorbuike Emmanuel, 25. Upon searching the suspects and the area, officers recovered a locally made double barrel shotgun and two live cartridges. The firearm was found inside a red bag carried by Ifediorah.

Ikenga added that while two suspects were apprehended, several other members of the group fled into the surrounding bush as soon as they noticed the arrival of police operatives. Efforts are currently underway to track down and arrest the fleeing suspects, as the operation has now been expanded to nearby communities.

The police spokesperson emphasized that the successful interception is part of a broader and ongoing strategy by the Anambra State Police Command to dismantle cult groups and curb cult related violence that has threatened peace in several parts of the state.

He noted that the Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, has issued fresh directives strengthening surveillance, intelligence gathering and rapid response units to proactively tackle criminal activities. Orutugu also urged residents to remain vigilant and continue assisting law enforcement agencies with credible information.

“The Command will not relent in its commitment to ensuring the safety and security of all residents. We call on the public to support our efforts by reporting suspicious activities promptly,” Ikenga stated.

The operation has been praised by community members, who said frequent cult clashes have caused fear and instability in recent months. Many residents expressed hope that the latest police action will help restore calm in Enugwu Ukwu and surrounding areas.

As investigations continue, authorities reaffirm that the crackdown on cultism remains a top security priority in Anambra State.
