The Enugu State Police Command has arrested a 25 year old man, Orlu Chukwuemeka, over his alleged involvement in a violent one chance kidnapping and armed robbery operation in the Enugu metropolis. The arrest comes at a time when security agencies across the state are intensifying efforts to curb criminal activities, especially during the festive season when such incidents tend to increase.
The Command’s spokesperson, SP Daniel Ndukwe, confirmed the development in a statement issued on Monday. According to him, the suspect was apprehended after police officers from the New Haven Division and operatives of the Distress Response Squad responded swiftly to a distress call received at about 6 a.m. on December 6.
Ndukwe explained that initial investigations revealed that Chukwuemeka and an accomplice, who is currently on the run, operated an unregistered white mini bus and posed as legitimate commercial transporters. The duo allegedly picked up a female passenger at Fourth Dimension, along Chime Avenue, Enugu, before attacking her shortly after the journey began.
The suspects were said to have stabbed the victim, robbed her of her Android phone and ATM card, and then pushed her out of the moving vehicle. They immediately attempted to escape through the Independence Layout area.
However, the police acted on timely intelligence and launched a coordinated chase. Officers successfully intercepted the suspect’s vehicle, arresting Chukwuemeka while his partner managed to flee the scene. The victim was taken to a nearby hospital where she received treatment. She later identified the arrested suspect as one of the men who attacked her.
SP Ndukwe confirmed that the suspect has since been arraigned in court and remanded in custody pending further investigations. He added that police efforts have intensified to locate and apprehend the fleeing accomplice, as the Command is determined to dismantle the criminal network behind such attacks.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, commended the swift actions of residents who alerted security operatives. He noted that timely information remains critical in crime prevention efforts. He assured the public that the Command is fully committed to sustaining aggressive patrols, intelligence gathering, and rapid response operations throughout the Yuletide season and beyond.
Giwa urged residents to remain vigilant, avoid boarding unregistered vehicles, and continue providing credible information that can help security agencies track criminal elements and keep the state safe.
