Nigerian singer Peter Okoye, popularly known as Mr P or Mr P Square, has revealed that his greatest fear in life is not death, but poverty. The singer made the revelation during a recent episode of the Nancy Isime Show.
Recalling a difficult childhood experience, Okoye recounted how his family’s rented one-bedroom apartment was demolished after the landlord sold the property. He described living with his parents and seven siblings in a single room, divided by curtains, and how the demolition forced them into sudden displacement.
He said, “I am not afraid of death. The only thing I am afraid of in this life is poverty, of being broke. I have tasted it before. We were living in a boys quarter, me, my mum, my dad, all of us. The whole family, six boys and two girls, living in a one-bedroom apartment. They had to divide the room with a curtain. The landlord sold the compound, and we were trying to plead for some time to plan our relocation. Then a bulldozer came and started demolishing the house while we were still inside.”
Okoye’s candid reflection highlights the challenges he faced growing up and the resilience that has shaped his successful music career. He emphasized that his experiences with poverty continue to motivate him, driving him to work hard to ensure financial stability for himself and his family.
The singer, who gained international fame as part of the musical duo P Square, has since built a thriving solo career, but his childhood struggles remain a key influence on his life and outlook.
