A tragic incident has rocked Sheme village, Faskari Local Government Area of Katsina State, after a 30-year-old nursing mother and her 10-month-old baby were reportedly killed and dumped in a well. The shocking event has left the local community stunned and searching for answers.
Police have arrested a 35-year-old suspect, identified as Rabiu, in connection with the killings, while an alleged accomplice remains at large. Authorities are intensifying efforts to apprehend the second suspect to ensure that all individuals involved are brought to justice.
The Katsina State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abubakar Sadiq Aliyu, confirmed the incident in a statement on Friday. He revealed that preliminary investigations indicate the attack was linked to a dispute over the paternity of the child.
According to DSP Aliyu, the suspect confessed to committing the crime along with his accomplice. The victims were allegedly lured to the outskirts of the village, where they were killed, burned, and thrown into a well in an attempt to conceal the crime.
The bodies have since been recovered, and the primary suspect remains in custody. Investigators continue to probe the full circumstances surrounding the attack, including the motive and the role of the fleeing accomplice.
Commissioner of Police Bello Shehu described the killings as barbaric and condemned the act in the strongest terms. He assured the public that the police command would leave no stone unturned in bringing the perpetrators to justice. He also appealed to residents to provide any credible information that could assist the investigation, stressing that such information would be handled confidentially.
The incident has reignited concerns over domestic violence and family disputes in the region. Similar cases involving family conflicts and violent acts have been reported across the country in recent months, prompting renewed calls for stronger community awareness, early intervention programs, and more effective mechanisms to protect vulnerable family members, especially children.
The Katsina State Police Command confirmed that the investigation is ongoing and urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity immediately. Community leaders have also called for increased education and outreach programs to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
This horrific case highlights the urgent need for greater awareness of child protection, conflict resolution, and parental responsibilities in local communities. Authorities continue to work diligently to ensure justice for the victims while providing support to the grieving family during this difficult time.
