Nigeria’s SGF George Akume Marries Queen Zaynab, Former Wife of the Ooni of Ife

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, Senator George Akume, has taken a new wife, Queen Zaynab Ngohemba George Akume Dajoh, who was formerly married to the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi.

The marriage became public knowledge on Friday following a Facebook post by Abraham Double D Dajoh, a member of the Dajoh family. In the post, the family officially announced the union and welcomed Queen Zaynab into the Akume and Dajoh families.

According to the statement, members of the Dajoh family expressed joy over the marriage and described the new bride as an uncommon woman. They also called on supporters and well wishers of Senator Akume to continue to stand by him as he begins this new chapter of his personal life.

“We, the entire Dajoh family, happily join our daddy, uncle, and brother, His Excellency, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume Jugu Dajoh, in welcoming his new and uncommon wife, Queen Zaynab Ngohemba George Akume Dajoh, into the Dajoh family,” the statement read.

The family further welcomed Queen Zaynab to Benue State, popularly known as the Food Basket of the Nation, as well as to Mbakor, described as the seat of leadership of the Tiv nation. They also referred to the Dajoh family as the home of her husband and extended goodwill messages to Nigerians during the Christmas season and the coming New Year.

Queen Zaynab was previously known as Queen Zaynab Otiti Obanor during her marriage to the Ooni of Ife. She got married to Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi in a traditional wedding ceremony held in Benin City, Edo State, on March 12, 2016. This was followed by a thanksgiving service and a reception on March 13, 2016, at the Royal Court of Ife in Osun State.

However, the marriage between Queen Zaynab and the Ooni of Ife ended in August 2017, about one year after the wedding. The separation attracted public attention at the time because of the status of the Ooni as a prominent traditional ruler in Yorubaland.

Senator George Akume is a former governor of Benue State and a former senator, with decades of experience in Nigerian politics. He currently serves as the Secretary to the Government of the Federation under President Bola Tinubu’s administration and plays a key role in coordinating government policies and programmes.

The news of his marriage has drawn widespread attention across the country, particularly on social media, where Nigerians have expressed mixed reactions. While some have congratulated the SGF and wished the couple well, others have questioned the timing of the marriage.

The development comes at a period when Nigeria is grappling with serious security challenges, including attacks by terrorists and bandits in several parts of the country. In recent days, there have also been reports of foreign military airstrikes targeting terrorist enclaves in parts of north western Nigeria, adding to national tension.

As of the time of filing this report, neither Senator Akume nor Queen Zaynab has issued an official personal statement regarding the marriage. However, the announcement by the Dajoh family has continued to generate discussion and debate among Nigerians both online and offline.
