The Nigerian military has strongly denied reports alleging that a Nigerian Air Force aircraft was involved in a covert intelligence operation in Burkina Faso, describing the claims as false, misleading, and completely lacking factual foundation.
A reliable military source who spoke to journalists explained that the aircraft was on a duly authorised ferry flight to Portugal for scheduled depot level maintenance, which is a routine and internationally recognised procedure in the operational lifecycle of military transport aircraft.
According to the source, the aircraft had no operational, intelligence, or surveillance assignment and was fully cleared with all required flight documentation. This included diplomatic overflight approvals and provisions for diversion, in line with international aviation safety standards and protocols.
The source clarified that the precautionary landing at Bobo Dioulasso in Burkina Faso was carried out strictly for safety reasons and in full compliance with established aviation regulations. He stressed that the landing was neither unusual nor suspicious, noting that such decisions are common during long distance military ferry flights.
“At no point was the aircraft intercepted, forced to land, or operating without authorisation. Claims suggesting airspace violations or hostile intent are entirely fabricated,” the source stated.
He further rejected allegations linking the flight to espionage, signals intelligence gathering, foreign sponsorship, or the involvement of external networks, describing such narratives as deliberate attempts to misinform the public.
The source explained that personnel onboard consisted only of certified aircrew and mission support officers conducting a legitimate military air movement. He added that the aircraft was not equipped with any surveillance or data collection systems capable of intelligence operations.
According to the source, interactions between Burkinabe authorities and the Nigerian Air Force crew remained professional and cordial throughout the stopover, with all procedures handled in accordance with established military and diplomatic norms.
Contrary to widespread online speculation, the source clarified that the Nigerian Air Force did not issue any statement claiming that the aircraft crew had been detained or later released.
He stated that all matters concerning the aircraft and its personnel were being responsibly managed by relevant Nigerian government ministries and agencies through established diplomatic channels, in line with international norms and bilateral relations between Nigeria and Burkina Faso.
The military source described the spread of the reports as a coordinated disinformation effort aimed at discrediting Nigeria, eroding public trust in national institutions, and creating unnecessary tension within the subregion.
He urged Nigerians to remain calm, rely on verified and credible information sources, and ignore sensational narratives capable of distorting facts and threatening regional stability.
“In an era of heightened information warfare, citizens must approach national security issues with discernment, caution, and a strong sense of responsibility,” the source said.
