A mother in Sandy Springs, Georgia, has been accused of fatally stabbing her 11-year-old daughter before attempting to take her own life in a case that has shocked the local community.
Shannen Grimes, 42, faces multiple serious charges, including murder, felony murder, cruelty to children, tampering with evidence, and possession of a firearm or knife during the commission of a felony. Her daughter, Genesis, tragically died on November 14.
Sandy Springs Police Sergeant Leon Millholland described the case as “tough for everyone, the family, the community, and the police officers who had to deal with this,” highlighting the tragic nature of the incident.
Emergency services were called after Grimes’ sister reported that the mother had attempted to harm herself. Officers responding to the welfare check found Grimes lying on a sofa at the Laurel Grove Condominiums with a wrist injury and bleeding.
However, the most horrifying discovery awaited them inside the home. Investigators found Genesis’ body in a recliner, partially covered with a blanket or towel. An initial investigation revealed that she had been stabbed multiple times in her shoulder and neck area. Blood stains were discovered throughout the residence, including in Grimes’ bedroom, bathroom, and kitchen. Officers also found blood-soaked clothing, towels, and several knives near the sink.
During the course of the investigation, Grimes allegedly confessed to stabbing her daughter while being transported to the hospital. She also reportedly sent chilling text messages to her sister, writing:
“If they are harming girls, they cannot have Gen.”
“My beautiful, talented angel can sing her whistle tone in heaven.”
“Nothing you can do now. Sorry guys, I tried to clean up some.”
These messages appear to reference conversations Grimes had with her father the day before the tragedy. Police reports indicate that the discussions left her feeling fearful and paranoid, as she believed she and her daughter were at risk from someone seeking access to family resources.
Local officers confirmed that no one else was present in the home during the incident and that there were no signs of forced entry. Investigators also noted that one door had a chair wedged beneath the handle, suggesting Grimes had secured the scene intentionally.
Following her discharge from the hospital, Grimes was questioned by authorities. She reportedly stated that she “never intended to kill her daughter” and believed that if she harmed herself, she and Genesis would “wake up like a bad dream.”
The case has sent shockwaves through the community and has raised questions about warning signs and the challenges of addressing mental health crises within families. Grimes is currently being held in Fulton County Jail, and her case will proceed before a grand jury. Authorities continue to investigate the full circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
