A 40-year-old Michigan woman has been charged with the brutal murder of her 22-year-old pregnant daughter in what prosecutors are calling a “truly horrific homicide.” The case has shocked both local residents and the nation due to the extreme violence involved and the disturbing circumstances surrounding the crime.
Rebecca Park, who was nearly 39 weeks pregnant, disappeared on November 3 after visiting her mother, Cortney Bartholomew, in Boon Township. Her body was discovered three weeks later in Huron-Manistee National Forest. Prosecutors allege that the unborn child had been forcibly removed from Rebecca’s womb and remains missing.
Bartholomew, 40, and Rebecca’s stepfather, Brad, were arrested on Tuesday and charged with first-degree murder, torture, and assault on a pregnant individual resulting in death, among other offenses. According to prosecutor Johanna Carey, the couple allegedly forced Rebecca into a car, drove her into the woods, stabbed her, and compelled her to lie on the ground while they removed her baby, resulting in the death of both mother and child. Carey described Bartholomew as “evil personified.”
Authorities have not disclosed a motive for the crime, but investigators indicated that the couple lured Rebecca to their home with the alleged intention of killing her unborn child. The attack has raised serious concerns about domestic violence and the safety of pregnant women in the community.
Rebecca’s body was reportedly discovered by her biological father after tracing the location of her mobile phone. The body of the unborn baby has not yet been recovered, and searches are ongoing.
Both Bartholomew and Brad face eight criminal counts, with Brad additionally receiving a habitual offender notice that could result in a life sentence if convicted. The couple is being held without bail pending further court proceedings.
In a related development, Rebecca’s half-sister Kimberly, 21, and her fiancé Richard Falor, 43, were arrested hours after the discovery of the body on separate charges. Kimberly faces accusations of tampering with evidence, providing false information to police, and filing a fake report, while Falor is being held on suspicion of delivering methamphetamine.
Community members have expressed shock and outrage at the horrific nature of the crime. Neighbors described Rebecca as a quiet and kind young woman, and many are demanding justice for both her and her unborn child. Local authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the deaths and are urging anyone with information to come forward.
The case is expected to draw national attention as further details emerge in the coming days, particularly concerning the fate of the unborn child and the role of other family members.
