The Imo State Police Command has arrested a 58-year-old man, Vitalis Nwoko, from Umuagba in Ahiazu Mbaise Local Government Area, following the alleged beating of his wife, Uloma, which tragically resulted in her death.
Police spokesperson Henry Okoye confirmed the arrest in a statement on Sunday night, explaining that the incident was reported by the deceased’s sister to the Ahiazu Mbaise Police Division. According to the police, the couple had a disagreement on Thursday, December 11, 2025, which escalated into a violent altercation.
During the fight, Uloma reportedly collapsed and was immediately rushed to Cecilia Hospital, Ogbe, where medical personnel pronounced her dead. The police said the arrest of Vitalis Nwoko followed swift action after the report was lodged by the deceased’s sister, who alleged that her brother-in-law had violently assaulted his wife during the domestic dispute.
“Operatives of the Ahiazu Mbaise Divisional Headquarters have arrested Vitalis Nwoko for the alleged murder of his wife. The arrest followed a report lodged by the deceased’s sister, who alleged that the suspect violently assaulted his wife during a domestic dispute. Acting promptly on the report, operatives of the Division arrested the suspect,” Okoye stated.
He added, “During preliminary investigation, the suspect admitted that a misunderstanding between him and his wife on December 11 escalated into a physical altercation, during which the victim collapsed. She was rushed to Cecilia Hospital, Ogbe, where she was confirmed dead by a medical doctor.”
Following the arrest, Vitalis Nwoko has been transferred from the Ahiazu Mbaise Police Division to the State Police Headquarters for further investigation and prosecution. The police assured the public that the matter is being handled with urgency to ensure justice is served.
The Imo State Commissioner of Police, Aboki Danjuma, has urged residents to report cases of domestic violence promptly, emphasizing that the Command will act decisively against perpetrators. He stressed that domestic violence is a serious crime and that authorities are committed to protecting victims and ensuring that offenders are brought to justice.
Community members have expressed shock and sadness over the incident, highlighting the need for greater awareness and preventive measures against domestic violence. The case serves as a reminder of the importance of early intervention and reporting in situations of family conflict to prevent such tragic outcomes.
