A former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, SAN, has asked the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Ola Olukayode, to step aside from his ongoing investigation, citing alleged bias and lack of objectivity.
Malami accused the EFCC chairman of personal vendetta, political persecution, and prejudice, which he claimed were linked to his recent defection to the African Democratic Congress.
The former Attorney General made the allegation in a statement issued on Monday through his media aide, Muhammad Doka. He alleged that the EFCC under Olukayode’s leadership was engaging in what he described as illegal detention, media harassment, and procedural abuse in its handling of the case against him.
According to Malami, the probe was not motivated by genuine law enforcement concerns but by long standing personal animosity within the leadership of the anti corruption agency.
“I have been clearly prejudged and cannot receive a fair, objective, or lawful investigation under the current leadership of the EFCC,” Malami stated.
He maintained that for the investigation to be credible and in line with the principles of fairness and justice, the EFCC chairman should recuse himself from the matter.
As of the time of filing this report, the EFCC had not issued an official response to Malami’s allegations.
The development has sparked renewed debate over the independence of anti corruption agencies and the need for transparency and fairness in high profile investigations.
