The Kwara State Government has denied reports circulating on social media claiming that the Nigerian Army arrested armed bandits in Ifelodun Local Government Area. The government described the viral claims as false, misleading, and lacking factual basis.
The clarification comes after a video went viral in which some suspects, allegedly arrested in Ifelodun, claimed that they were supplied with arms and a vehicle by the state government. The video sparked widespread discussions on social media, leading to misinformation and confusion among residents.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the Commissioner for Communications, Mrs. Bola Olukoju, emphasized that no armed bandit has been arrested by the Nigerian Army or any other security agency in Ifelodun or any other part of Kwara State.
“Kwara State Government wishes to clarify that the Nigerian Army did not arrest any armed bandit in Ifelodun Local Government Area of the State, contrary to the disinformation spreading on social media platforms,” the statement read.
The commissioner explained that the suspects in the video claimed to have a vehicle allegedly provided by the “Ilorin Government” and weapons reportedly obtained “from Abuja.” However, investigations revealed that the suspects were not arrested in Kwara State, but reportedly in Auchi, Edo State. Further details are awaited to provide more clarity on the circumstances surrounding their arrest.
Mrs. Olukoju also clarified that no state government has the constitutional authority to supply individuals with firearms such as AK-47 rifles. The suspects in the video did not state that the Kwara State Government supplied them with weapons, contrary to what has been circulated online.
The statement further noted that the vehicle referenced in the video was originally provided to vigilantes deployed in Ifelodun to complement local security efforts. These vigilantes have since left the area, and the local government had repeatedly requested the return of the vehicle.
The Kwara State Government expressed concern over the spread of misinformation, highlighting the importance of verifying facts before sharing content online. Officials urged residents to rely on verified government sources for accurate information.
While investigations into the matter continue, the government called for enhanced inter-agency collaboration and intelligence sharing among security agencies to effectively combat banditry and other violent crimes. Authorities reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring the safety of residents and maintaining peace and security across the state.
The statement concluded by emphasizing that the government remains vigilant in its efforts to support security agencies, protect communities, and counter misinformation that may undermine public trust.
