Five students of Rivers State University, Nkpolu Oroworukwo, Port Harcourt, who were abducted from the institution’s satellite campus in Emuoha Local Government Area on Tuesday, have been rescued unharmed, authorities confirmed.
The abduction triggered widespread panic among students and sparked protests, with many demanding that the school management relocate them to the main campus for safety.
Addressing the aggrieved students on Tuesday, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Isaac Zeb Obipi, announced the temporary suspension of academic activities at the Emuoha campus. He instructed all students residing there to vacate the premises until further notice to ensure their safety.
Confirming the development on Thursday, the spokesperson for the Rivers State Police Command, Grace Iringe Koko, revealed that the five abducted students were rescued during a coordinated operation conducted by police tactical teams and other security agencies at Rumuodogo 2 Community in Emuoha Local Government Area.
In a statement, Iringe Koko said the students, one of whom is female, have been taken to hospital for medical evaluation. She added that efforts are ongoing to apprehend the fleeing kidnappers.
The police identified the rescued undergraduates as Prince London, Azubuike Kelechukwu, Elizabeth Aniete, Onyebuchi Precious, and London Sampson. They were reportedly abducted by unidentified cultists from isolated residences on campus.
“The Rivers State Police Command wishes to inform the public that on 04/12/2025 at about 0100hrs, the five abducted victims have been successfully rescued unhurt,” the statement read.
“The rescue operation was conducted by the Command’s Tactical Teams in collaboration with other sister security agencies and with support from the community. The rescued victims have been taken to hospital for medical examination. Intensive efforts are ongoing to track down and arrest the fleeing cultists and abductors.”
Authorities have reassured the public and students that security will be strengthened at Rivers State University to prevent future incidents. The police continue to work with the community to ensure the culprits are apprehended and brought to justice.
