The Edo State Police Command has commenced an investigation into allegations of corpse tampering and theft of body parts at Akugbe Mortuary, located along Upper Sakponba Road in Benin City.
The command’s spokesperson, Assistant Superintendent of Police Eno Ikoedem, disclosed the development in a statement, confirming that the Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, has ordered that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for a thorough, professional and discreet investigation.
According to the police, the directive was issued to ensure that the matter is handled with the seriousness it deserves and that the full circumstances surrounding the alleged incident are uncovered.
ASP Ikoedem stated that the command would leave no stone unturned in establishing the truth of the allegations and vowed that anyone found culpable would be prosecuted in accordance with the law.
The investigation follows a complaint lodged on December 12, 2025, by one Marvelous Odeh and other family members, who reportedly visited Akugbe Mortuary to claim the body of the late Uyi Enogieru for burial.
Upon arrival at the mortuary, the family allegedly discovered that the corpse had been unlawfully interfered with, with some body parts missing, prompting immediate outrage and a report to the police.
The disturbing allegation has since sparked concern among residents and raised questions about safety standards and oversight at mortuary facilities within the state.
Police authorities have assured the public that the investigation will be handled with utmost diligence and sensitivity, given the emotional and cultural implications of such incidents.
As of the time of filing this report, no arrests have been announced, but investigations are ongoing to determine how the alleged tampering occurred and who may be responsible.
The Edo State Police Command reiterated its commitment to protecting citizens and ensuring justice, urging members of the public with relevant information to cooperate with investigators.
