A final-year student of Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, Edo State, has tragically lost his life in a road crash during a motorcade parade to celebrate the completion of final examinations. The identity of the deceased has not yet been released.
The accident occurred on Monday shortly after the students finished their last examination, according to reports from Inside Edo. Eyewitnesses said that the vehicle involved attempted to overtake another vehicle, lost control, and rammed into a stationary truck near Ujoelen, close to the primary school. Residents rushed to the scene, but despite their efforts, the student could not be saved.
The convoy consisted of fresh graduates celebrating the end of their academic journey with a parade along the highways. Witnesses indicated that the students were driving recklessly, engaging in risky maneuvers and failing to follow basic road safety rules, which contributed to the fatal crash.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) confirmed that one person died while five others sustained injuries. According to FRSC Edo State Sector Commander, Cyril Mathew, the deceased attempted to overtake a moving truck and collided with a stationary vehicle parked along the roadside.
Efforts to reach Mathew initially proved unsuccessful, but NAN later reported that he confirmed the incident and emphasized the dangers of reckless driving, especially during celebratory events like graduation motorcades. The FRSC warned young drivers to prioritize road safety and avoid risky behaviors that could endanger their lives and the lives of others.
Motorcade celebrations by graduating students have become a common tradition in many Nigerian universities. While they are intended as moments of joy and achievement, such events can quickly turn tragic when participants ignore traffic laws, exceed safe speeds, or attempt dangerous overtaking maneuvers.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the need for vigilance, responsible driving, and proper coordination during celebratory parades. Authorities have urged students, motorists, and bystanders to exercise caution and cooperate with security agencies to prevent further road tragedies.
