The Edo State House of Assembly has directed the lawmaker representing Egor Constituency, Natasha Irobosa Osawaru, to appear before its Ethics and Privileges Committee within one week. This decision follows the circulation of a viral video that captured a heated confrontation between the lawmaker and her husband, the Nigerian singer Innocent Ujah Idibia, known as 2Baba. The video, recorded inside a shop in London, spread widely across social media platforms and was later aired on national television stations.
During the plenary session on Tuesday, Speaker Blessing Agbebaku addressed the matter openly. He described the incident as an embarrassment to the Assembly and stated that the lawmaker’s conduct had placed the institution in public disrepute. He noted that the video had dominated discussions online and had attracted national media attention.
The Speaker explained that the House considers itself a reputable institution made up of educated and responsible members who are expected to protect the dignity of the legislature at all times. He stated that the behaviour seen in the video does not align with the standards expected from a member of the Edo State House of Assembly. He added that the incident cannot be ignored because it has influenced public perception of the House.
“For the past one week, she has been trending negatively on electronic media and social media platforms,” Agbebaku said. “Television stations such as TVC, Silverbird, and other channels have carried the story. The attention this has drawn to the House is unnecessary and unacceptable.”
Agbebaku expressed concern that the actions of one member had brought unwanted controversy to the legislature. He stressed that the House must maintain its integrity and cannot allow the conduct of a single lawmaker to damage its reputation. He reminded members that they represent the people and must uphold the dignity of their office.
The video shows Osawaru raising her voice repeatedly during the argument with her husband. Her words in the footage have been shared widely across online platforms, prompting debate among viewers. Some questioned the nature of the altercation. Others focused on the implications of a serving lawmaker being involved in a publicised domestic dispute.
The Speaker clarified that the summons is not intended as a personal attack. Instead, it is a necessary step to protect the credibility of the Assembly. He explained that the Ethics and Privileges Committee has been instructed to conduct a thorough investigation. The committee has been given two weeks to complete its inquiry and submit a report to the full Assembly.
The inquiry will likely examine whether the lawmaker’s behaviour violated the code of conduct of the Assembly and whether the public circulation of the video has affected the image of the institution. It may also consider the broader implications of private matters becoming public issues for elected officials.
Throughout his remarks, Agbebaku emphasised that the Assembly remains a respectable institution. He stated that its members are committed to maintaining the trust and confidence of the public. He added that no member will be permitted to undermine the reputation of the House through personal behaviour.
Investigation will be closely observed, as it may influence how similar cases are handled in the future within the Edo State legislature.
