Chaos in Nawfia: Multiple Feared Dead After Attack at Afor Market Junction

A yet-to-be-disclosed number of people are feared dead following a violent attack by unknown armed men near the Afor Market Junction in Nawfia community, Njikoka Local Government Area of Anambra State on Sunday.

Residents described scenes of sheer panic and chaos as the attackers reportedly opened fire on unsuspecting members of the community. Some victims were fatally injured, while others fled desperately for safety.

One local source said, “The armed hoodlums invaded Afor Market Junction and immediately opened fire, killing a lot of people. Nobody knows the reason behind the attack, the attack has left our community shaken.”

Other residents who spoke to reporters expressed shock, fear, and confusion over the sudden violence, calling for an increased security presence to protect lives and restore a sense of normalcy. An eyewitness at the scene recounted, “It was chaos. The attackers came out of nowhere this evening in a commando like fashion and started shooting indiscriminately. People were running in all directions, and it was difficult to tell who was safe.”

Video footage currently circulating online shows members of the community running for their lives, while several lifeless bodies reportedly lay on the ground in pools of blood. The graphic visuals have further heightened fear and anxiety among residents.

Chief Daniel Okoye, President General of the Nawfia Progressive Union, confirmed the incident in a press statement and said that relevant security agencies had already been contacted. He added that investigations are underway to identify and apprehend those responsible for the attack.

Okoye stated, “This evening, I received with deep shock the tragic news of an attack at the Afor Market Junction in Nawfia community. The incident resulted in multiple casualties caused by unknown assailants who carried out this senseless act of violence. I strongly condemn this heartbreaking incident and the attempt to disrupt the peace of our beloved community. I have already contacted the relevant security agencies, and investigations are underway to uncover those responsible.

“I appeal to all Ndi Nawfia to remain calm, stay vigilant, and continue to cooperate with security operatives as they work tirelessly to restore normalcy and ensure our safety. My thoughts and prayers are with the families affected. On behalf of the Nawfia Progressive Union, I extend our deepest sympathies and assure you that we are fully committed to supporting efforts aimed at protecting lives and maintaining peace in Nawfia.”

Attempts to reach the Anambra State Police Command’s Spokesman, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, for comment were unsuccessful. However, a police source who spoke on condition of anonymity confirmed that the police have launched a full scale investigation into the attack and are actively working to apprehend the perpetrators. The source emphasized, “We condemn these heinous acts and assure the public that we will do everything possible to bring the culprits to justice.”

As the investigation continues, the community remains on edge, grappling with the shock and trauma caused by the attack. Residents are urged to remain vigilant, cooperate with security operatives, and report any suspicious activity to help restore safety and order to Nawfia.

This tragic incident has raised renewed concerns about the security situation in Anambra State, and the urgent need for more proactive measures to prevent such violent attacks in vulnerable communities.
