BREAKING: Tinubu Nominates Ex-CDS Gen. Christopher Musa as Defence Minister

President Bola Tinubu has officially nominated retired General Christopher Gwabin Musa, former Chief of Defence Staff, as Nigeria’s new Minister of Defence.

In a letter addressed to Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Tinubu confirmed Musa’s nomination as the successor to Alhaji Mohammed Badaru, who stepped down from the position on Monday. The appointment is expected to undergo confirmation by the Nigerian Senate in the coming weeks.

Gen. Musa served as Chief of Defence Staff from 2023 until October 2025. He is widely respected in military circles and was awarded the prestigious Colin Powell Award for Soldiering in 2012, highlighting his distinguished career in Nigeria’s armed forces.

Born in Sokoto in 1967, Musa completed both his primary and secondary education in the state. He then attended the College of Advanced Studies in Zaria, graduating in 1986. He subsequently enrolled at the Nigerian Defence Academy the same year, earning a Bachelor of Science degree upon graduation in 1991.

Musa’s nomination comes at a critical time for Nigeria, as the Defence Ministry faces increasing challenges related to terrorism, banditry, and national security. Observers note that his extensive military background and experience as Chief of Defence Staff could be crucial in shaping policies and strategies to tackle the country’s pressing security concerns.

The announcement has sparked widespread discussion across media platforms, with many Nigerians expressing hope that his leadership will strengthen the nation’s security apparatus and improve coordination among the armed forces.
