Dr. Chris Ngige, former Governor of Anambra State and immediate past Minister of Labour and Employment, has been taken into custody by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC. The arrest was confirmed on Tuesday by Ngige’s former media aide, Mr. Fred Chukwuelobe, who clarified that earlier social media reports claiming the ex-minister had been kidnapped were false.
In a statement, Chukwuelobe said, “Former Governor of Anambra State and immediate past Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige, is with the EFCC. More details later.” He emphasized that Ngige is in EFCC custody as part of official proceedings, and not the victim of an abduction.
The clarification comes amid widespread online speculation that unknown gunmen had targeted the former minister, causing anxiety among the public and political observers.
Ngige, who served as Minister of Labour under former President Muhammadu Buhari, was recently in the news following an armed attack on his convoy in Anambra State. Although he was not in the vehicle at the time of the assault, the incident raised concerns over his personal safety and underscored ongoing security challenges for prominent public figures.
As of now, the reasons for Ngige’s arrest and the specifics of the EFCC’s investigation remain undisclosed. The EFCC is yet to release an official statement, but further updates are expected as the matter develops.
This development has reignited public discussion about anti-corruption enforcement in Nigeria and the EFCC’s role in holding high-profile individuals accountable. Citizens and political analysts alike are awaiting more information on the circumstances surrounding the arrest and the potential implications for the political landscape.
