Tension gripped the Gyado Villa area of Makurdi, the Benue State capital, on Thursday morning after an angry mob lynched a suspected motorcycle snatcher in a violent incident that has sparked renewed concern over rising insecurity and jungle justice in the state.
The incident reportedly occurred in the early hours of the day when residents caught the suspect during an alleged attempt to snatch a motorcycle within the neighbourhood. According to eyewitnesses, the suspect was apprehended by locals who raised an alarm, attracting a large crowd to the scene.
Witnesses said the situation quickly spiralled out of control as the suspect was beaten by the mob. Despite attempts by some residents to calm the situation, the crowd allegedly set the suspect ablaze, leading to his death on the spot.
Sources in the area disclosed that two other suspects believed to be accomplices managed to escape during the chaos. They were said to have fled the scene in a vehicle suspected to have been used for the criminal operation, raising fears that they could still be at large.
The incident reportedly caused panic and temporary disruption in the area, as many residents stayed indoors while others gathered at a distance to observe developments. Some residents expressed frustration, blaming the incident on frequent cases of motorcycle theft and other criminal activities in the area, which they said had gone unchecked for some time.
As of the time of filing this report, the Benue State Police Command had not issued an official statement on the incident. It was also unclear whether any arrests had been made in connection with the mob action or whether efforts had begun to track down the fleeing suspects.
The incident has once again drawn attention to the growing menace of jungle justice across communities. Stakeholders have continued to call for improved security presence, prompt response by law enforcement agencies, and increased public awareness on the dangers and legal consequences of taking the law into one’s own hands.
